This bank holiday weekend is an ideal time to visit a heritage railway. The weather forecast isn’t too positive, so why not sit back under the cover of a carriage and be hauled by a heritage locomotive? It’s what I shall be doing, of course!
I’m planning on visiting the Kent and East Sussex Railway who are celebrating 40 years of preservation. It’s been far too many years since I took a ride on the line and am looking forward to traveling from quaint Tenterden to Bodiam, with it’s beautiful castle.
Alex is hoping to go to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway’s ‘Back to black’ gala (click here for more info), which has a wide selection of locomotives, many painted in by far the most common steam locomotive colour – black! It looks to be quite an event!
Simon also has plans that involve heritage steam! He is hoping to visit the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s Spring Gala that promises to be a “Festival of Island locos!”
There are of course plenty of more things going on across the country. Didcot railway Centre are holding a diesel gala, the South Devon Railway a BR Mixed traction event, the Bure Valley Railway will run everything they can in their “Everything goes” event, whilst the East Lancashire railway will be holding their 1940’s weekend… and there is so much besides! Go check out your local line to see what is happening!
Happy Bank Holiday locoyard followers!

Just a shame the weathers not a bit better. I’m lucky at the moment its forecast to be dry and cloudy on monday so I wont get soaked unlike Alex and Dave.

Very wet today! Heavy showers and thunder storms. Fantastic day all the same, lots of beautiful locomotives and very friendly volunteers.
