Gwili Gala – Loco Allocations

Image

Further to our blog post announcing the Gwili Railway’s much anticipated “Anything Goes” gala, to be held on 29th September, a few weeks back, we are now in a position to advertise the loco allocations for the event.

See the original blog post here; https://locoyard.com/2013/08/13/anything-goes-at-the-gwili-in-september/

The diagrams, loco allocation and timetable have all seen the UKHH work alongside the gala organisers to showcase a truly brilliant event.

The locos for the event include;

Haulwen

3879 Vulcan Foundry-built Austerity locomotive built in 1945 (works number 5272). Rebuilt in 1961 by Hunslet Ltd (works number 3879)

Haulwen is a Hunslet Austerity locomotive, a type which were built in large numbers during the Second World War. Constructed at the Vulcan Foundry in 1945, she initially worked on the Longmoor Miltary Railway before being transferred to the Woolmer Institutional Railway. Sold by the Army to Hunslet in 1959, she was re-built and re-numbered before being sold again to the National Coal Board to work initially at Cambrian Colliery, and then alongside Number 1 at Mountain Ash. The engine was placed on loan to the Caerphilly Railway Society in 1981 and was later bought by them. The name Haulwen means “White Sunlight”, “Bright Sunlight” or “Bright Star” depending on the translation from Welsh and was the name of Mountain Ash Colliery Manager’s grand-daughter.

Jennifer

Jennifer is an 0-6-0 tank locomotive built by Hudswell Clarke & Co in 1942. It spent its working life in Sheffield running around as Samuel Fox & co Ltd’s no.20, It moved initially to the West Somerset railway before moving to Winson Engineering of Davenrty, later being donated to the Llangollen Railway Trust in 2001 where it underwent a major overhaul.

Jennifer has been on hire to the Gwili over the past couple of years to assist with daily running and at special events.

D2178

Built in 1961 at Swindon Works, Ashford was D2178’s first shed, arriving on the 9th January 1962. Shortly after, it was loaned out to the Plymouth Friary shed, before moving the short distance to Laira in the August. September 1963, saw the 03 being transferred to the West Midlands, with Wolverhampton Stafford Road becoming its next residence. In the March of 1969, it was taken out of traffic and stored. Just two months later though, D2178 was moved to Oxford shed, where it was reinstated back to use. Sometime around the 6th July, it was hired out to a private track lifting company, before returning to Laira, from where it was withdrawn on the 13th September 1969. With it being in BR service for only 8 years, the 03 never recieved a TOPS number.

Its industrial history started off with the Newport ( Gwent ) based A.R Adams Company, with it being purchased from BR in February 1970. Whilst on its books, the 03 was hired out to numerous other companies, before being re-sold on to the National Smokeless Fuels Company, working at the Gwaun Cae Gurwen disposal point. Later on, it was moved to the Coad Ely Coking Plant in May 1974, and then on to the now closed Nantgarw Colliery ( Mid Glamorgan ), to where it gained the number 2. Sometime in 1979, the 03 was given an overhaul at Swindon Works, proir to its move in to preservation. In 1983, D2178 was purchased by the Caerphilly Railway Society, to where it was moved to the Gwili Railway, to where it can be usually found, outbased at the Bronwydd Arms depot.

This locomotive shall be on Driver for a Fiver duties within Bronwydd Arms station limits during the event.

Class 117 DMU

The British Rail Class 117 diesel multiple units (DMUs) were built by Pressed Steel from 1959 to 1961.

When first introduced, these three-car units were all based with the similar Class 121 single carriage (railcar) units on British Railway’s Western Region for suburban work out of London Paddington, as well as South Wales (specifically Cardiff) and Cornwall. The units were largely based at Southall, Cardiff Canton TMD and Plymouth Laira depots. The units remained here for many years working these services.

This 3 car set currently based at the Gwili moved to us from the Swansea Vale Railway a couple of years ago and is currently undergoing a repaint into BR Green complete with the ‘Whiskers’
