As with it’s fellow Paignton and Dartmouth Railway based cousin 5239 Goliath that featured on Saturday (click here to read more), 7827 Lydham Manor has for many years been one of the stalwarts of the line’s fleet. It also shares a similar history in it’s preservation; being an ex-Barry scrapyard locomotive.
Closely related to Ivatt’s 4MT 2-6-0, the BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0 class was a useful locomotive used in most regions, with the exception of the west. 115 were produced, 17 of them with a larger BR1B tender for the Southern region. The Paignton and Dartmouth Railway is set in one of the most stunning settings of any heritage railway in the UK. Running from the seaside resort of Paignton, the line climbs through woodland, through Greenway tunnel to the Dart Estuary, terminating in Kingswear, where we see the giant Great Western Tank Engine, aptly named Goliath.
