Model Rail magazine announced today that they have commissioned Dapol to produce a RTR USA dock tank. This is a fantastic development for Southern modellers like myself to have a RTR version of something very unique in 00 scale.
The locomotives were constructed in Pennsylvania for use during the second world war and were used throughout Europe. 15 of them were were absorbed into the Southern Railway and were used largely to replace the ex-LSWR B4 dock tanks.
Graham Muz wrote a fantastic post earlier on the USA tanks. Further details of the project and how to preorder can be found on the Model Rail Offers website, with details of the first few livery/numbers.
Two of these locomotives are preserved on the Kent & East Sussex Railway and I have many fond memories of these powerful locomotives working hard up Tenterden Bank. I’ve included some scanned pictures of DS238 Wainwright, taken during the 1990’s.
Another USA dock tank is preserved on the Bluebell Railway and a fourth UK survivor can be found on the Keighly and Worth Valley Railway.
Details/information of the preserved locomotives can be found by clicking on the details below:
Additionally two ex-JŽ class 62 locomotives have been imported from Europe. These Yugoslavic built locomotives are virtual carbon copies of the USA tanks.
