The King class of steam locomotive was the most powerful 4-6-0 type built in the UK. The type were built partly in response to to the Southern Railway’s Lord Nelson class that had previously taken away the GWR Castle class’ title of “most powerful express type”.
As with it’s fellow Paignton and Dartmouth Railway based cousin 5239 Goliath that featured on Saturday (click here to read more), 7827 Lydham Manor has for many years been one of the stalwarts of the line’s fleet. It also shares a similar history in it’s preservation; being an ex-Barry scrapyard locomotive.

The Paignton and Dartmouth Railway is set in one of the most stunning settings of any heritage railway in the UK.
