In the past I’ve always claimed that the Locoyard model collection is 100% steam. This has not always been the case! In the first of a series of posts we look at some of the ghosts of Locoyard past, starting with three diesel models, all since sold to another home. The most interesting of the trio is a Hornby InterCity XPT. As this was a childhood model, I honestly do not know where it was purchased, however it was not in the country that the prototype runs… Australia! Yes this is a special model of Australian imported train, an unusual version of the classic Intercity class 43.
The model was of reasonable value given that it was fairly rare and fittingly was sold to an Australian collector.
The same could not be said of the next diesel – class 47 47541 The Queen Mother. This Hornby model is seriously outclassed by many more recent versions, particularly Bachmann’s, although Vi-Trains and Heljan’s versions are also better. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t worth much when sold! That said, it was a never a favourite of mine, so it’s good that it has a new owner who appreciates it more.
The final entry is the worst skeleton in the closet here! In my opinion, Hornby’s Railroad class 08 is one of the worst models available. I came into possession of this one as part of collection and sold it almost instantly!
More ghosts of Locoyard past will be published in due course. Thanks for reading Locoyard followers!

I remember being thrilled beyond measure when I received a green 08 just like that for my Christmas in 1977 along with a second hand 75t crane. Didn’t care that it was second hand either, I just had so much fun with them. Does yours have the counterweight linked to the rear coupling for automatic shunting? 🙂

Hi,
Thanks for the comment. 🙂 From what I recall, the 08 did not have the counterweight, but I can see that being a useful feature!
All the best,
Dave
