Today’s blog post is the final report from a visit to the Swanage Railway and is of a remarkable narrow gauge locomotive that can be found on display at Corfe Castle Museum.
Secundus is a (now) unique 2ft 8in gauge locomotive built by Bellis & Seekings Ltd in Birmingham, 1874; for use on the Furzebrook Tramway. It partly owes it’s unusual appearance from being an 0-6-0 well tank with outside Stephenson valve gear (below) and cowcatcher (above).
The tall chimney and large dome (below) also give Secundus plenty of character!
The locomotive, on loan from Birmingham Museum; is one good reason for stopping at Corfe Castle station.
You’re unlikely to find many other locomotive’s that look like this!
