The UKHH are pleased to exclusively announce that the current standing on the Sir Haydn Appeal is £16.5k!! Which is a substantial jump over the past couple of months.

Over the past year, Talyllyn Railway steam locomotive No.3 Sir Haydn has been on a unique tour around the steam heritage railways and museums of the UK, and the next leg of its tour has now been announced.

From November it will be on display at the Engine House museum at Highley Station on the Severn Valley Railway. This is the second time that the locomotive has been a visitor to the Severn Valley Railway after appearing as a guest star at the railways ‘Autumn Steam Gala’ in September. Then it put in memorable appearances on a standard gauge wagon, which was steam-hauled in special trains across the 16 mile heritage railway.

An appeal to raise funds for the overhaul and return to steam of the 1878 built 2’ 3” gauge locomotive is continuing. It is hoped its latest visit to the Engine House will encourage members of the public to help support the return to steam of the locomotive, which was purchased by the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society in 1952 for £25 to operate on the world’s first preserved railway at Tywyn in Mid Wales. Since then it has been a popular and regular member of the Talyllyn’s locomotive fleet.

Tour Co-ordinator Ellis Jacklin said of the visit ‘The visit of Sir Haydn to the Engine House is a culmination of a fantastic year for this little loco. It has popped up in various surprising places over the year and brought back memories of previous happy visits to the Talyllyn Railway to those that have seen it across the UK.’

This year, Sir Haydn has visited the Great Central Railway at both its Loughborough and Nottingham sites, as well as the Tyseley Open Days in Birmingham; from there the loco visited the Midland Railway, Butterley followed by the Severn Valley Railway and West Somerset Railway. It was at the latter’s ‘Cambrian Gala’ that No.3 once again traveled aboard a standard gauge wagon giving photographers a unique chance to see a narrow gauge loco aboard a steam-hauled standard gauge freight train.
