Goodbye Movember, Hello Christmas!

Locoyard 2013 - Thomas the Tank Engine with a mustache for Movember hauls Santas TrainThe Movember competition for 2013 ends today.  Unfortunately we only received two entries this year, which is a pity, but they were excellent entries all the same.  The first from Simon Shutt (click here to view) and the second from Gary Ruming (click here to view).  The competition winner of the random prize draw will be contacted separately to be given the good news.

Although the competition has fallen short of expectations this year, I hope that it has spread awareness of the cause.

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 9 of men in the UK – it is the most common form of cancer in men. In 2010 40,841 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Current survival rates are around 81% – this rate was just 31% at the beginning of the 1970’s. A very significant reason for this marked improvement is early treatment.

In 2009, testicular cancer affected 2,209 men in England and Wales of whom 97% survived. In the early 1970’s; 69% of men survived and again, a significant reason for this difference is awareness of the early signs that make treatment so much easier and successful.

The below slideshow shows some pictures from Locoyard of this month’s Movember Competition.

    • Unfortunately due to the low demand this year we may not do the same thing next year, unless we have many requests of course! There certainly will be something to get involved with though, so please stay tuned 😉
