It was a year ago today that Mr and Mrs LocoYard visited the Great Gathering at York aka Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It was truly a once in a lifetime event for those lucky enough to attend.
On the first day of the 75th Anniversary of Mallard breaking the world speed record for steam traction, my friends at UK Heritage Hub published some of the first pictures of “The Gathering” here on Locoyard which gave an excellent background (click here to read it) to why all six surviving Gresley A4 Pacific locomotives have come together in York. Such a feat took a lot of hard work – two of the locomotives had to be shipped across from North America and be cosmetically restored. On 26/10/13, i was invited to the “great gathering” at the N.R.M. along with 75 A.4 PACIFIC former train crewes,,It was a special and wonderful day for me and my wife, we were treated like V,I,P,S ..Having drove the MALLARD, it was lovely to see her standing proud with her sister locomotives. Maybe, one day, someone will light another fire in her belly and WOOSH!,, she will fly!,,WOLLOP!,,she will soar and strong hard men will wheep at her beauty,,,,One of them will be me ,,john anthony.

Sounds like an amazing evening, ashamed to say I haven’t been been to the NRM in over 15 years but the last time I saw the Mallard she was in steam hauling our train out of York. Was an amazing day and one of my earliest childhood memories
