It’s National Volunteers Week

Good evening,

From the 1st -7th June it’s National ‪Volunteers Week‬ when various charities and organisations across the country take the chance to say thank you to the brilliant work their volunteers do.

This is also the case of the Mid Hants Railway who are taking the opportunity thank the over 800 volunteers (myself included) who keep the line going. Volunteers are the backbone of the Mid Hants Railway, without them there would be no trains running, no coaches to sit in, no stations to wait at and no track to run on. From a day per month, to days in a week, these loyal volunteers take it upon themselves to travel up to 100 miles to help out in one way or another.  There’s a surprising variety of volunteer roles, it’s not all just engineering and locomotives! Some use their existing skills and some like to do something totally different! As well as the lines operational volunteers including station staff, guards, signalmen, drivers and firemen, they also have volunteer roles in engineering, education, catering, retail, building, carpentry, customer services and even horticulture!

With some people fitting their visits around full-time work commitments and others joining when they retire, the MHR’s volunteer workforce keeps us functioning every day. Keeping body and mind active, the railway is a ready-made community waiting to welcome you in!

Other railways are also using volunteers week as an excuse to show off their volunteers amazing work. If you’re interested most railways are advertising their upcoming recuirtment fayres on their various websites and who knows we might be able to convince Dave into finally volunteering 😉
