Stansted Park Light Railway

Stansted Park Light Railway July 2015 (2)Last weekend was going to be a couple of days without any railway action, simply to catch up on odds and ends in the garden.  After a glorious Saturday, Sunday afternoon proved to be rather wet and so not ideal for gardening, but a perfect time to go to a Garden Centre looking for inspiration. So my wife and I visited Stansted House garden centre, near Rowlands Castle in Hampshire.  Being relatively new to the area, it had not occurred to me that there might be a railway there, if it had I wouldn’t have used my phone to take these pictures (hence the poor quality).  Having spent time looking at the plants with my wife, I braved the elements to have a quick look at the 7 ¼ gauge railway.Stansted Park Light Railway July 2015 (1)Had it been better weather and a steam engine running I would have had a ride.  My wife is puts up with my hobby most of the time, but a soaking wet open carriage hauled by a petrol powered locomotive was never going to win me any brownie points!  Despite that, I was very impressed by what I saw.  The semaphore signals and signalbox looked great, but I have found out that that is the tip of the iceberg!  There is a 12 foot long girder bridge, 6 road engine shed and workshop with turntable and even a 3 road carriage shed.  So I will return one day!  To see more, go to their website www.splr.info
