Those who have read Locoyard’s article in issue 17 of UK Heritage Hub’s newsletter, may have noticed a previously unpublished photograph of the City of Truro! Now is therefore a good time to publish a set of pictures of the locomotive taken on the Watercress Line in 2011.
3717 City of Truro is (in my opinion) one of the most graceful locomotives ever built and I was looking forward to seeing it in action again in the Watercress Line’s Great Steam Spring Gala 2013, but unfortunately this will not happen, as today, 3717 was withdrawn from service.
Arguably, 3717’s greatest claim to fame is being the first (albeit unofficial) locomotive to run at 100MPH. Whether it did or not is open to debate, but the very thought of this elderly, elegant locomotive traveling at such a speed sends shivers down the spine!
I hope you’ve enjoyed looking through these pictures taken in 2011. Other pictures from this gala will be published in time – as ever, watch this space! Thanks for reading folks 🙂
